Rivertown is the historic district of Kenner located on the river at the end of Williams Blvd. Rivertown features a number of cultural and historic resources. Rivertown is also a pleasent place to spend a day, with a number of attractive little shops to browse and a great view of the Mississippi.
At the very end of Williams Boulevard is a memorial to the long and interesting
history of the city of Kenner. Here fly the numerous flags under which Kenner
has existed since LaSalle's landing. Among others are the Union Jack, the
flag of Spain, and the flag of the Confederate States of America. Located in the park is also a statue commemorating the first
world heavyweight boxing championship, which was held in the city of Kenner.
This museum celebrates the colorful history of Mardi Gras. Fifteen videos recount 150 years of Mardi Gras including parades, balls, king cake, and the Cajun "Courir du Mardi Gras." At scheduled time live demonstrations are offered by Mardi Gras craftsman. The Mardi Gras Museum is sponsored by the Treasure Chest Casino.
The Louisiana Wildlife museum at 303 Williams Boulevard offers visitors an encounter with 700 examples of Louisiana wildlife, including one of the world's only displays of the extinct Passenger Pigeon and the Ivory Billed Woodpecker. Aquatic life is diplayed in a 15,000 gallon freshwater aquarium, including perch, catfish and bass. Other diplays include a tree house, oil rig and a model of an oil rig. Rivertown features a replica of an 1861 vintage Confederate ten pound Parrott cannon. The replica was placed in Rivertown to commemorate the Coleman Iron Foundry. The Coleman foundry was Kenner's first industry and was located near the present location of the cannon. During Union occupation, General Butler ordered the foundry destroyed and discharged into the river.
Located at 325 Minor Street, the new location of the Rivertown Repertory Theatre features 300 seats, all with a full view of the stage. Productions include Broadway musicals and plays. The theater is the winner of several Big Easy awards and features some of the best talent in the state. Call 468-7221 for more information and ticket availability.
Located at 409 Williams Boulevard, The Daily Living Science Center is one of the most popular attractions in Rivertown. Here visitors learn some of the many ways in which science affects our daily lives. The main attraction is a life-size prototype of the NASA Space Station. A gyroscope allows visitors to experience weightlessness during live interactive demonstrations.
Other fascinating exhibets include a cut-away house, a cut-away car engine, a plastic kitchen, the tracking of a hurricane and more. The Daily Living Science Center is sponsored by Freeport McMoran. For more information call 468-7229.
The Louisiana Toy Train Museum is located at 519 Williams Boulevard. It offers a large collection of toy trains and working models. A 1/2 scale caboose serves as a playhouse for smaller children. Outdoors there is a dirt race track for radio controlled model cars. The Toy Train Museum is a popular location for family parties and birthdays. Call 468-7223 for more information.
The Saints Hall of Fame includes team memorabilia, photographs, giant screen videos and busts of Saints' Hall of Famer's. Located at 409 Williams Boulevard, the Saints' Hall of Fame is sponsored by Coca Cola. Call 468-6617 for more information.
